TERM 2 WEEK 8 NEWSLETTER

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

This will be my last newsletter as principal of Holy Rosary School. It has been a privilege and honour to be the principal of such a wonderful school community. I would like to thank all of our families for your support over the past 9 months. Jenny and I have thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and are very sad to be leaving. The staff are extremely committed and we have achieved so much in such a short period of time. Please continue to support the school and the new principal Melanie Resuggan.

Tomorrow we are holding our annual Faction Athletics Carnival. Mr. Kayde has been working extremely hard preparing the students and getting the track marked for this special day. The events start at 8:30am and should finish at the latest 1.00pm. The Year 6 parents will be selling tea, coffee and cakes, for the parents, to raise money for the Year 6 camp. Please support them and you’ll need to bring cash. I look forward to seeing you at the carnival tomorrow.

If you haven’t had a Parent/Teacher interview with your child’s teacher please make an appointment immediately. The information you receive is very accurate and important for you to understand and support your child’s educational development.

Head lice is an ongoing problem in all schools. Please check your child’s hair on a weekly basis.

Many thanks for making Jenny and I feel so welcome into your beautiful school community. Best wishes from both of us.

Our Lady Queen of the Holy Rosary Pray for Us.

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

I have been informed by Catholic Education Western Australia (CEWA) that an announcement regarding the new substantive principal for Holy Rosary School will be made tomorrow. All families will be sent the information electronically.

Next Friday, 17th June, we will be holding our annual Faction Athletics Carnival. Mr. Kayde has been busy preparing the students for their track, field and team events. The Athletics Carnival is always a great day so please make an effort to support your child and the school.

Our Year 6 students are busy fundraising for their camp in Term 3. At the moment they are selling raffle tickets for a signed, framed West Coast Eagles jumper with second prize a painting donated by Mark Norval and third prize a $100 voucher donated by Derby Shell. You can purchase tickets from our Year 6 students, at the Derby Markets each Saturday or from the school office. Tickets are $5.

On Tuesday we had a very productive professional learning day for all of the staff. Our presenter was Roger Saulsman who is a school improvement consultant. Roger ran us through high impact teaching strategies (Explicit Instruction) and the importance of coaching and feedback for the staff. Our staff are doing an amazing job and it has been wonderful to see them embrace the feedback given to them following their observations.

Please remember to contribute to our Containers for Change initiative by either sending your containers to school or when you take them to the disposal point please quote our number C10566203

Thank you for supporting our Healthy Eating and plastic/packaging free policy. We have gone from putting out 11 landfill bins to 4 each week. This is an enormous improvement. Well done!

TERM 2 WEEK 6 NEWSLETTER

Dear Parents/Caregivers,

Yesterday we held our Parent/Teacher meetings in the Multi-Purpose Room. I would like to thank the staff for their commitment to these meetings and keeping you informed about your child/Children’s progress. Thanks also to all the families who continue to support our students’ progress and the school’s processes. I was extremely disappointed with the number of families who did not make the effort to attend this important, informative meeting regarding their child’s education. I strongly believe the most important thing a family can give their child, after love and care, ia an education. Please prioritise your child’s education highly, where it belongs. Semester 1 reports will be sent out in Week 10.

I would like to remind you that next Tuesday, 7th June is a Pupil free Day.

Monsignor Paul Boyers is quite unwell at the moment and had to be flown to Perth with RFDS on Tuesday. Please keep Monsignor Paul in your prayers and let’s all pray for his rapid and full recovery.

Miss Chloe Beckett and her family will be leaving Holy Rosary School and Derby at the end of the week. They are relocating in Port Hedland. I would like to thank Miss Chloe for the enormous contribution she has made to our school over the past 12 years and I would like to wish her and her family all the best for the future.

Starting Friday, 3rd June, we will be holding our weekly Friday Fresh Markets at the assembly. We hope to hold them each week but it will depend on the availability of the produce in the garden. This week we have eggs, worm juice, cucumbers and bok choy (maybe). Please support our Green Team to make our garden centre sustainable by purchasing our produce. Please remember to bring along some cash.

Eggs – $5/dozen                        Worm Juice – $2 for 2litres                Vegetables – $1

On Tuesday 7th June, the day after the WA Day public holiday, we will be holding a Pupil Free Day. The staff will be involved in a day of professional learning on improving lesson delivery through explicit instruction teaching strategies.

Last Saturday we held a very productive Busy Bee. We finished off the garden centre and had a general clean up around the school. I would like to thank Miss Jenny, Prue, Zac and Asha Smith, Tayah Alec and Dennis O’Meara for their contribution to making the morning a success.

TERM 2 WEEK 2 NEWSLETTER

Dear Parents/Caregivers,

In our quest to eliminate waste in our school and the Derby community we have joined the Containers for Change project. This means we can recycle drink cans and bottles and raise money for the school at the same time. We are temporarily using tubs, in faction colours, while we are waiting for some faction coloured wheelie bins. Please send in your recyclable containers and remember “Don’t feed the fill.”

Due to four staff changes for next term, Miss Chloe moving to Port Hedland, Mr. Kayde on Long Service Leave, Miss Christine on Maternity Leave and Miss Jenny moving back to Perth, we have employed new staff to replace them. I am pleased to inform you that we have been fortunate to appoint quality staff to replace all of them. I will explain the changes in detail next week when all the paperwork and necessary checks have been carried out.

I would like to thank all of the parents who are supporting our Healthy Eating/Plastic Free initiative. The children enjoy getting their raffle tickets on Waste Wise Wednesday and Waste Free Friday. It has become very noticeable the decrease in the amount of waste in our bins going to landfill. Please help us to help your precious children and our precious environment.

Happy Mothers’ Day to all of our Mums.

TERM 2 WEEK 1 NEWSLETTER

Dear Parents/Caregivers,

I would like to welcome all of our families back to Holy Rosary School for the start of Term 2. I hope you had a wonderful Easter and the opportunity to spend some quality time with your family. Unfortunately, COVID-19 has arrived in Derby and we have a large number of families affected and quite a few students absent to start the new term.

This term we will be exploring our Healthy Eating Policy and single use plastic initiative. You can find the recommended food list in the Parent Handbook, on the attached sheet and on our school website. There are a multitude of benefits by following our policy and initiative. They are: general health, ability to concentrate, able to perform all day, arrest obesity, dental health, lower risk of diabetes, cost and saving our environment. The attached sheet, also available on our website, explains how we are introducing our initiative with Waste Wise Wednesday and Waste Free Friday. Please support this initiative and if you have any questions, please see me.

Our new garden centre, dedicated to the De La Salle Brothers, is nearly complete. We are in the process of setting up our worm farm, compost tumbler and completing our chook pen. The Year 4 class are our Green Team and they have been broken into 4 groups to run the garden centre. The groups are Chook Champs, Worm Warriors, Garden Gurus and Rubbish Rangers. You are welcome to walk through the garden at the back of the kindergarten/Pre-Primary classrooms.

We had a large amount of general maintenance carried out over the holidays. A new garden and lawn areas were established in the early childhood area.

COVID-19 Update

Mr. Steve Dowie

Principal

Holy Rosary School, Derby

08.04.2022

Dear Parents\Carers,

I am writing to advise you that there have been positive cases of COVID-19 in Pre-Primary and Kindergarten at Holy Rosary School which impacts their onsite attendance today and required arrangements to be made for them to be picked up from the school. The Pre-Primary and Kindergarten students will need to isolate for 7 days.

If your child develops symptoms or becomes a household close contact (for example, if a family member is confirmed positive), they must stay home and isolate for 7 days.

You can find out more about what to do if you or your child is a close contact including testing dates at https://healthcloudtrialmaster-15a4d-1711fadea38.force.com/AdviceCloseContacts/s/. COVID-19 PCR testing can be accessed at a COVID Clinic. A list of clinics can be found here: https://www.healthywa.wa.gov.au/COVIDclinics

We are also providing the following advice for all families in our school community:

Holy Rosary School remains open today for all other year groups. As for everyone in Western Australia, we ask that you monitor your child/yourself for symptoms of COVID-19 and get tested and isolate until you receive a negative result, if symptoms develop.

Please note that the Omicron strain can present with less typical symptoms such as diarrhoea, particularly in children. If you or your child develops symptoms, please take a RAT or PCR. This development may make your child feel worried or anxious, as it will many of us who are parents. It is important to remember that you can help your child at this time, first by listening attentively to their concerns, and then by providing some reassurance. As a Catholic School, the safety and wellbeing of our students is always our priority as is showing care and support for all members of our community.

Please refrain from sharing this news via social media and allow the school, CEWA and WA Health to communicate the facts – protecting both the privacy and dignity of all concerned. I will keep you updated when further information is to hand.

Please monitor for further communication from ourselves and WA Health. If you have queries or concerns regarding your child please contact me. If you have health concerns, please contact WA Health on 1300 316 555.

In the interests of safety for the school students and staff ensure enhanced cleaning of any impacted areas will occur, due to the respective areas having been compromised.

Yours sincerely,
Steve Dowie
